If you have been lucky in life, have your health, a happy family and enjoy what you do, then you should return the favour and help others.
One area where I help out is my kids’ schools.
At their primary school, I set in place fundraising schemes that raised over €200,000.
At their state secondary school, I used to sit on the PTA mainly helping out with any fundraising activities the BoM of the school would allow. (And tried to instigate several that the Board said No Way!).
I also sit on the school’s Sports Council. A remarkable body that gives the kids so many sporting opportunities on a budget of about €60,000 a year to pay for coaching fees, facilities etc
I was talking about this many years ago to a friend. His kids go to a North Dublin fee-paying school. He said their sports budget was €1million and all of it went on Rugby.
That blew my mind and when I told others, it blew theirs too.
The Department of Education in Ireland provides no funding to state schools for extra curricular activities - sport, music, drama or anything!
So I will.
Regardless of what you think of them, the Shmuu Crú Edibles and Shmuu Medical have enormous potential. The businesses have been set up so there is minimal cost so all things going well, we will make significant profits. More than a handful of shareholders can spend in a lifetime. So it is our intention to fund after school activities in state schools - sports, the arts, music and business. We need to get young minds active and passionate, it will do them the power of good for their futures, all to Ireland's benefit.
How we do it is for another day but please watch this space.
