Hello all,

Welcome to our weekly ritual of tunes, kindness, and connection. Wherever you are in the world, come 4:20 on a Friday, most of us are thinking of the weekend and spending time doing what we love.

If, like me, that usually involves going to gigs, you are in the right place. We are truely blessed here in Ireland with incredible music talent. From traditional, through all the genres to the heaviest of rock music, time and time again, I'm blown away by how many fantastic bands we have in Ireland.

So, every week, at 4:20 on a Friday, we're going to come in here and listen to an Irish band that played here recently.

As an open forum, anyone and everyone is welcome to post content here. The only criteria is that they blew you away when you heard them.

You're also welcome to post anything you did or said this week that made someone smile or maybe something that someone did for you. The world is full of good people.

I hope you enjoy.............

Stratford Rise

The first band featured on this thread are a four-piece from Belfast and are probably too young to be on shmuu.com.

However, their music shows a brave maturity that reminds me of how the Beatles pushed boundaries back in the day. They can produce some great noise rock moments.

I've seen them three times in the last 12 months. Last weekend was in Workmans Cellar.

Here's a clip of a song they played. They recorded it when, from my reckoning, they were about 12 years old. What were you doing at 12 years old?

What were they listening to growing up? Turns out the lead singer's dad is big into Black Sabbath. He was in the audience last week and it was mentioned.

Just heard next week’s band. A support act from Dublin

I missed the first few seconds but hooked from there.

I love listening to music for the first time, you have no idea where it’s going to take you,

Anemoia
pronounced“AN-uh-MOY-uh.”it means nostalgia for a time you’ve never lived through.

Caught them in Bello Bar supporting UK band Gutting a Body ofWater this now Dublin-based band that originated in Mayo, had me hooked from the first few bars. The clip shown is their first song and like most support bands I've seen, their performance just got better and better with each subsequent number. Their genre would be Shoegaze and noise rock infused with dreamy, nostalgic textures and explosive guitar distortion. Loved them!

DigDeep

First caught these guys last December when they played Whelans. They impressed me with their tightness playing together, they sounded like they've been together for years but they've only recorded a couple of tracks on Spotify.
I missed the gig last week in Sin É, luckily someone recorded it so you too can listen to 20-odd minutes of their swamp, bog rock sound (their words not mine).

Back to that gig last December. The mosh pit had an extremely rare event - a mosh couple. Here's a link to them

Details later. How’s everyone doing?

At a gig across the road from my house, big tent in a public park. Took me an hour to get here. So many people. I wonder how many are Shmuu’d? 👋

This band have just finished and they were brilliant.

Just in case I miss tomorrow’s entry they were called BBFT.

You can’t tell what a band’s music is like until you’ve heard them live. It can be totally different to how they sound on Spotify. What do you think?

Will post the live start tomorrow……..🤞

This is the live version of bbft. So different to the Spotify version. No sure why but much prefer live version..

Divides Unfold

Founded in 2015, this Belfast heavy rock band were great in Whelan's last weekend. Supporting Dublin grunge band Vendetta Love I think they stole the show.

MotionSickness

I could have chosen any of the three bands featured in the triple bill at Whelan's as our Irishmuusic choice for this week however, we went with MotionSickness. Not sure where in Ireland they are from but the energy they created on stage was fantastic. Vocalist and guitarist, Kara Moore, gave it in spades. Well done to them all.

Also on the bill were Bruiser and headliners A Dead Human.

This was my highlight from a weekend of music. Saw about 16 bands over 4 nights and managed to sleep in my bed.

Teenage band called. Aerial, can’t find too much about them online. They played a teenage alcohol-free festival and the lead singer managed to control the crowd to mosh like the best of them.

Love a good mosh!

I discovered during the week to catch the first 4:20 globally I need to post at 1:20am

So until I solve that problem, have a listen to these guys - Glasseyed

Support band but you’d love it. Blows you away, nodding like a crazy person. Love it! ❤️

The Main act, Layen, were equally impressive.

Really aggressive moshs tonight. Very unusual

There’s a festival this weekend here in Dublin, 3 nights of live bands for €15 plus you get to sleep in your bed and **** in your toilet. Plus I get to go to work this morning.
I am living the dream!

Here’s the schedule for last night, Theatre were one of my favourites.

ShmoneyDoll

Born in Nigeria but living in Ireland since she was two, this lady rocked the Saturday night of last weekend’s We’ve Only Just Begun festival.

All the bands had female or non-binary lead singers and the festival was organised and sound engineered by women. Everything went like clockwork. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Telekura

This Dublin band’s sound has been called "weird and wonderful" by Hot Press. I’d call it a mix of synthetic pop with alt rock. Loved the lead singer’s powerful voice.

On the bus into town last week, the far-right have hung tricolours on lots of lampposts in parts of town where they have elected councillors. Not good. If I was a person of colour, I would find that intimidating.

However, I was on my way to see Should’ve Signed to the A in Whelan’s. Hanging around the smoking area before they opened the doors, met some of them. SSTTA is a collective of first generation Irish rappers. The coolest, loveliest bunch of kids I’ve met in a long time.

The atmosphere throughout the gig was so chilled, again mostly young first generation crowd, you could have been in New York or LA. Fantastic to be there, just enjoying the music like everyone else. Loved it!

Do what you like far-right, Ireland is now a multicultural melting pot and so much the better for it!

Clip here is from the first support act.
